Discover the Barn Theatre: Cirencester's Cultural Gem
Located in the ever-vibrant town of Cirencester, the Barn Theatre (not to be confused with Cirencester’s Amphitheatre) is a small, charming venue that showcases the artistic spirit of the Cotswolds. With its commitment to high-quality theatrical productions, the Barn Theatre & Cinema offers a delightful experience for anyone looking to explore the cultural offerings of this historic market town.
A Journey Through Time
The Barn’s story begins in 1812 when the Ingleside site, where the theatre now stands, was built as a private residence for Mr. Baylis, a wealthy local businessman. In the 1940s, the barn on the property served as storage for fodder and livestock. However, its transformation into a cultural hub began in the 1950s when it was converted into an artist’s studio for Paul Fryer.
In recent years, the Barn Theatre has undergone a remarkable transformation. Construction of the current facility began in 2014 and was completed in 2017. The theatre opened its first professional production to critical acclaim in March 2018 and is now considered one of the top ten theatres in the UK.
The Barn Theatre Today
Today, the Barn Theatre stands as a professionally run and managed theatre with to capacity to accommodate 200 guests in its auditorium.
The venue features flexible seating arrangements that can be adapted for all types of events. It hosts an array of exciting performances including theatrical productions, musicals, film screenings as well as community events. The theatre aims to provide a platform for both established and emerging artists while engaging with the local community at the same time.
